Build the MGEX Unicorn Ver. Ka without breaking its LED gimmick. Follow these ordered steps for clean panel lines, decals, and safe light-up testing.
Quick answer
Build the MGEX Unicorn in subassemblies, panel line the white armor before you install the LED unit, and test the light-up function after every major assembly stage. That order protects the electronics and keeps your lines clean.
Why the LED unit changes your build order
The MGEX Unicorn is not a standard Master Grade build. Its light-up LED function sits inside the kit, so any step that involves paint, thinner, or panel line fluid near the electronics needs to happen before the LED unit goes in. Work on the armor and frame as separate subassemblies, then bring them together only after the cosmetic work is finished.
The new molds also mean tighter fitting parts and more surface detail than older Unicorn kits. That detail rewards careful panel lining, but it also gives panel line fluid more places to pool. Plan to clean as you go rather than at the end.
Panel lining and decals: where most builds go wrong
Panel line fluid and decal setting solutions are safe on bare plastic, but they are not safe on an installed LED unit or on a painted surface that has not fully cured. The common mistake is lining the armor after the inner frame and LED are already assembled, which forces you to handle a fragile, semi-finished kit.
Decals are the second trap. The MGEX Unicorn has a lot of surface area, and rushing decals before the panel lines are fully dry can lift the lines or smear them. Let each layer dry completely before moving on.
Step-by-step MGEX Unicorn build and panel line process
- 1. Sort and dry-fit the runners: Separate the white armor runners from the inner frame and LED-related parts. Dry-fit the main armor panels before any cleanup so you know how the new molds seat together. If a part needs force, stop and check the manual orientation before trimming.
- 2. Clean nubs on armor before assembly: Snip and sand nubs on the white armor pieces while they are still off the kit. Work from coarse to fine grit, then wipe the dust away with a dry cloth. Sanding after assembly risks scratching nearby detail and scattering dust into the LED housing.
- 3. Panel line the armor as flat subassemblies: Apply panel line fluid along the molded grooves on the white armor only. Let it sit for a few seconds, then wipe across the line, not along it, with a lightly dampened swab. Keep fluid away from any part that will house the LED unit.
- 4. Apply decals after the lines are fully dry: Wait until the panel line fluid has cured, then place water-slide or sticker decals according to the manual. Use a setting solution sparingly and blot, do not rub. Decals placed over wet panel lines will trap fluid and lift later.
- 5. Assemble the inner frame and LED unit: Build the inner frame and install the LED unit exactly as the manual shows. Route wiring clear of moving joints and armor panels before closing anything up. Test the LED function at this stage before adding armor.
- 6. Attach armor and test the light-up function: Fit the finished armor panels over the frame, checking that no panel pinches a wire or blocks the LED. Power on the kit and confirm the light-up function works through the full range of motion. If the light flickers when you move a joint, open that section and reroute the wire.
- 7. Pose and display with the LED in mind: Set the final pose before you display the kit, and avoid extreme joint angles that stress the wiring. Keep the display area dry and away from direct heat. Recheck the light-up function after any major pose change.
Product facts
- Gundam MGEX 1/100 RX-0 Unicorn Gundam (Ver. Ka) - 40th Anniversary: First kit in the Master Grade Extreme line, with completely new molds for detailing, gimmicks, and articulation. New molds mean tighter fits and finer surface detail, so dry-fit before you commit to any panel line or decal placement.

Ka) - 40th Anniversary: Features a light-up LED function built into the 1/100 scale RX-0 Unicorn Gundam. Because the LED is internal, you must finish all panel lining and decal work before the electronics go in.
